IRS Extends April 15 Tax Deadline For Florida Residents

Taxpayers across the country are racing to meet the April 15 tax filing deadline — but not in Florida.

The IRS has granted individuals and businesses in federally declared disaster areas extra time to file, and that includes all of Florida. Residents now have until Thursday, May 1 to submit their tax returns.

Florida is one of five states where the extension applies statewide. The others are Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

In total, the IRS reminded residents in nine states about the new deadline. Taxpayers who need more time beyond May 1 can still request an extension.

Other disaster-affected regions also received deadline extensions later into the year. For example, residents of Los Angeles County, California, have until October 15 due to wildfires, while some Kentucky counties don’t have to file until November 3.

Information on how those extensions work can be found at IRS.gov/extensions.
