IRS Warns Americans About Tax Scams With New Fraud Reporting System
The Internal Revenue Service is warning Americans to stay alert for tax-related scams while introducing a new online tool designed to make reporting fraud easier and more secure.
The agency has launched a centralized webpage that allows taxpayers to confidentially report suspected tax fraud, scams, evasion, and other tax-related crimes. The goal is to simplify the reporting process and improve how the IRS handles tips from the public.
“Enhancements to the fraud reporting system will make it easier to submit reports and help the agency better use the information it receives,” according to IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano. “Taxpayers play a critical role in protecting the integrity of the nation’s tax system by reporting suspicious activity.”
What Is The New IRS Fraud Reporting System?
The newly launched platform brings together multiple fraud-reporting channels into one streamlined hub. By reducing paperwork, automating parts of the process, and incorporating improved case management technology, the IRS aims to more effectively review and act on referrals involving illegal tax activity.
How Can You Protect Yourself From Tax Scams?
The IRS encourages both taxpayers and tax professionals to take additional steps to safeguard their financial and personal information. One key recommendation is obtaining an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) — a six-digit code that prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. Taxpayers who do not yet have an IP PIN can request one as a proactive defense against identity theft.
Common Tax Scams To Watch For
Social Media Misinformation
False or misleading tax advice circulating online can mislead taxpayers about eligibility for credits or refunds. Some influencers may encourage people to falsify tax forms or claim the IRS is withholding benefits, potentially connecting users with fraudsters.
Phishing And Smishing
The IRS frequently warns about phishing emails and smishing (fraudulent text messages). These tactics are commonly used by criminals attempting to steal sensitive personal and financial information.
Scams Targeting Businesses And Tax Professionals
The IRS also reminds tax professionals of their legal responsibility to maintain a Written Information Security Plan and use multi-factor authentication to better protect client data.
By staying informed and taking preventive steps, taxpayers can reduce their risk and help combat tax fraud nationwide.
